Young children, older adults, pregnant women and anyone living with a health condition are particularly at risk of becoming seriously unwell.

The flu vaccine is your best line of defense against the flu. Getting vaccinated every year, before flu season starts, reduces your chances of getting the flu and if you do get sick, your symptoms might not be as severe.

Who should get the flu vaccine?

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is offering the flu vaccine to everyone over the age of 3. The flu vaccine is a single shot, but for children under the age of 9 who have not previously received a flu vaccine, 2 doses are recommended.

Those most at risk from flu are:

• Adults aged 50 years and above
• Children under 5 years
• Pregnant women
• Healthcare workers
• School-aged children (5 - 18 years)
• Close contacts of influenza positive cases
• Hajj and Umrah pilgrims
• Smokers
• Immunocompromised patients
• People with health conditions such as diabetes, chronic cardiovascular disease (excluding hypertension), chronic lung disease (including asthma), asplenia (including elective splenectomy and persistent complement component deficiencies), chronic liver disease, kidney failure, end stage renal disease, and recipients of hemodialysis, extreme obesity (BMI of 40 or more).

Do I need to have the flu vaccine every year?

The flu virus changes frequently so it is important to get your vaccination every year. A new flu vaccine is developed annually to protect against the flu strains that are predicted to cause the worst illnesses.

Taking your flu shot boosts your immunity against these strains of flu, and can help you avoid serious, long-lasting illness if you do catch the virus. It also helps prevent serious flu complications like pneumonia, bronchitis, and ear or sinus infections.

When should I receive the flu vaccine?

Cases of flu increase during the winter months. To maximize protection, you should have the flu vaccine in early autumn. The shot will protect you for a minimum of 6 months – enough to last the flu season.
