Dr. Arif O. Khan, MD, is a Staff Physician specialized in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Eye Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, where he is responsible for the Pediatric Eye Care Service.
Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Khan served as Senior Academic Consultant in the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia. He was also Senior Scientist at the Department of Genetics at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center during the same period. Before living in the Middle East, Dr. Khan was in private practice on Long Island, New York, and had a university appointment in New York City.
In addition to being experienced in the medical and surgical management of pediatric eye disease, Dr. Khan is a regional expert in Ocular Genetics. His clinical and research interests are the management and genetics of ocular developmental disorders and strabismus.
Dr. Khan has supervised and trained scores of residents in Ophthalmology and more than 30 Fellows in Pediatric Ophthalmology clinically, surgically, and academically. He continues to serve as an external examiner to certify competency of ophthalmologists-in-training.
Dr. Khan maintains strong contacts with Academic Ophthalmology in the United States and worldwide. He serves as Chair of the Editorial Committee for the American Academy of Ophthalmology Basic & Clinical Science Course (BCSC) Section 6 (Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus), Executive Board Member for the International Society for Genetic Eye Disease & Retinoblastoma, Ethics Bureau Member for the World Society of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus, Editorial Board Member for the journal Ophthalmic Genetics, and Committee Member for both the Genetic Eye Disorder and the International Affairs Committees of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus. Dr. Khan also served as both Editorial Board Member and later as Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus (JAAPOS).
Dr. Khan graduated Magna Cum Laude with Distinction (B.A.) from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, US, and Alpha Omega Alpha with Dean's Commendation (M.D.) from the State University of New York at Syracuse, New York, US. After an Internal Medicine internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Connecticut, US, Dr. Khan did his residency in Ophthalmology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, New York, US. Subsequently, he completed a subspecialty fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, US.
