Ramadan: How to Stay Connected When You Need to be Apart

Create a sense of togetherness with loved ones whilst apart

Around the world, many of the COVID-19 restrictions aimed at stopping the spread of the virus are still in place, meaning Ramadan may be different again for some this year.

Large gatherings with family and friends might not be possible for some, and travel restrictions may mean we can’t be with family members who usually travel to be together at this special time of year. But while we may not physically be with our loved ones, there are other ways to enjoy the spirit of Ramadan.

Thankfully, staying in touch with loved ones is much easier nowadays, and social media and video calling have become invaluable to many in recent weeks. As Ramadan approaches and we begin to really notice the absence of gathering in person, try and become more creative in the ways you can communicate.

Think of activities and reasons to connect and involve as many people as possible. Children have great imaginations so get them involved and always remember the older generation. Offer to set-up online accounts for them and call to make sure they know how to use the technology.

  • Cook along Organize a ‘live’ cook-along with family members. Ramadan will probably be associated with many fond memories of food preparation with extended family, so try and recreate the atmosphere by challenging people to all cook together.
  • Reading together During the day, set aside some time to talk to family elders. Call them up and perhaps select poems, verses from the Quran, or story books for the children, and take the time to discuss their meaning.
  • Breaking the fast If you have a favorite dish your family elders always make, ask them to share the recipes, or even do an online cook along. You can also gather everyone at the table and use video calling. Include everyone that would normally be there and celebrate Iftar together. Everyone will be thankful of the opportunity to break the fast together and share stories from the day.

We may not physically be with some members of our family or loved ones this Ramadan, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be connected. Use this special time to assess what is important in life, help support others in any way you can and come together whenever and however possible.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is here for all your health concerns this Ramadan, day and night. Our extended outpatient evening hours are available throughout Holy Month to offer you the care and support you need, whenever you need it.
