5 Tips to Help You Achieve a Healthy Work-Life Balance

Discover and commit to a balance that works for you

It’s the beginning of a new year, typically a time when many of us make resolutions – including promises to become frequent gym goers, adopt a healthier diet, take up a new hobby, or spend more quality time with family and friends.

Despite good intentions, very few resolutions made survive past February. An increasingly fast-paced life filled with commitments, deadlines, and being connected to work 24/7 via mobile technology results in little opportunity to take much needed time for ourselves.

A Positive Work-Life Balance

Why not take a different approach to your New Year’s resolution by trying to achieve a more positive work-life balance? By looking at the bigger picture and making some general lifestyle changes, your more specific resolutions may fall into place more easily.

5 Tips for a Better Work-Life Balance

1. Prioritize What’s Important

Firstly, take time to identify what is important to you at home and work, and then think about the time, energy and attention you would ideally like to invest in each item. This is a great starting point to begin mindfully prioritizing your life.

2. Take Time for Yourself

Taking time for yourself allows you to recharge and clear your mind. You’ll be more focused and energized if you plan ahead and allocate dedicated time to the things that are important to you, such as relaxation, healthy eating habits, exercise, or spending time with loved ones and friends. Disconnecting from technology, even for a short while, is a great way to enjoy your 'me' time without distractions and external pressures.

3. Set a Healthy Pace

Set the pace and avoid overstretching yourself by dividing your workload into manageable blocks and taking periodic breaks. Being aware of your personal peak productivity time is really helpful in prioritizing your workload, and making the best of your time.

4. Set your Limits

Setting limits is a helpful tool in finding a balance between work and home life. Decide on a time to leave your workplace, and commit to finishing your working day at that time. Setting these limits can help your work-time productivity, and reduce the likeliness of falling into a ‘staying late’ routine or burning out too early in your week. If you do have to work at home, set aside a specific time to start and finish as well.

5. Avoid Stress with Positivity

Stress in healthy doses can fuel productivity and encourage the best in you. However, sustained stress can deplete your energy, interest, and even your confidence in work. Finding a physical way to manage your stress such as exercise or light meditation, as well as associating your work with the positive impacts you make can help reduce work-related stress and negativity.

Try applying these useful tips to help you find a healthy balance between your work and home life.
