Things To Avoid Prior To 24 Hour Urine Collection

Please consult your doctor for information regarding medications that should be avoided.

URINE TEST

PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS

TICK AS APPLICABLE

Avoid all seafood for 72 hours prior to collection.

ARSENIC EXPOSURE

Seafood consumption two to three days prior to specimen collection can markedly elevate levels of total arsenic in urine.

CYSTINE QUANTITATIVE

The patient is taking penicillamine.

Avoid bananas, avocados, plums, eggplant, tomatoes, lantain, pineapples and walnuts.

5-HIAA

Do not take any paracetamol or drugs containing paracetamol 72 hours prior to collection.

HEAVY METALS

Avoid seafood and red wine 72 hours prior to collection.

Avoid aspirin, disulfiram, reserpine and pyridoxine, if possible, at least

HOMOVANILLIC ACID

48 hours prior to collection of the specimen.

Levodopa should be avoided for two weeks before collection.

No caffeine before or during collection.

METANEPHRINES

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors should be discontinued at least one week prior to beginning collection.

Avoid stress.

Many drugs (reserpine and α-methyldopa, levodopa, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and sympathomimetic amines) may interfere and should be discontinued two weeks prior to specimen collection.

Nose drops, sinus and cough medicines, bronchodilators and appetite

CATECHOLAMINE

suppressants, α2-agonists, calcium channel blockers, converting enzyme inhibitors, bromocriptine, phenothiazine, tricyclic antidepressants, α- and β-blockers, and labetalol may interfere.

Mandelamine® interferes, but thiazides do not.

Caffeine products should be avoided before and during collection.

The patient should not be subjected to hypoglycaemia or exertion.

Avoid salicylates, caffeine, phenothiazine and anti-hypertension agents.

VANILLYLMANDELIC

Coffee, tea, chocolate, fruit (especially bananas and any foods containing

ACID

vanilla) for 72 hours prior to collection.
