The Eye Misalignment & Movement Disorders team at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Eye Institute provide state-of-the-art diagnosis, treatment, and comprehensive follow-up for adults, children, and infants with misalignment and movement disorders of the eye.
The Eye Institute treats patients with both congenital and acquired eye misalignment and movement disorders. Conditions addressed by the caregiver team include strabismus (crossed eyes), nystagmus (shaking eyes), and gaze limitations that may or not be associated with double vision (diplopia) or abnormal head positions.
A team of highly trained orthoptists (caregivers who specialize in eye movement disorders) and ophthalmologists employ advanced technologies and procedures to provide the highest standard of Patients First care for patients affected by this group of disorders.

Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis of Eye Misalignment & Movement Disorders
Patients can be assured they will receive a comprehensive diagnosis from the Eye Institute. Orthoptists who are experts in measuring eye movements evaluate vision, eye alignment, and the potential for developing lazy eye. Ophthalmologists confirm the test results, complete the medical and refractive evaluation, and order further testing as required. The full appointment takes approximately two hours.
During the assessment, the patient is given eye drops to dilate the pupils. Patients should arrange for assistance with transportation after the appointment, when vision is altered. Public transportation and taxi information can be found on Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s How to Get Here page.
Treatment of Eye Misalignment & Movement Disorders
Based on examination findings, patients are offered one or more of the following types of treatment:
-
Optical treatment (with glasses or contact lenses, including prism corrective lenses that aid with eye alignment)
-
Medical treatment (with eye drops, patches, or exercises)
-
Eye muscle surgery.
