Diagnosis of Diabetic Eye Disease & Retinal Disorders

Physicians specialized in conditions of the retina use several methods to make each diagnosis, determine the severity of the patient’s eye disease, and help guide treatment decisions. At Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's Integrated Surgical Institute, management of diabetic eye disease and other retinal disorders is facilitated through state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies. An experienced ophthalmic nurse or technician conducts the patient’s initial, comprehensive eye exam. This is followed by a scan of the retina and a full clinical evaluation by a retina specialist. Diagnostic technologies offered at the Integrated Surgical Institute include:

• Optical coherence tomography (an imaging test that takes pictures of the retina)
• Retinal angiography (an imaging technique that takes pictures of the blood vessels in the retina)
• Ocular ultrasonography (an ultrasound of the eye)
• Electrophysiology (a test that assesses the nerve pathway from the eye to the brain).
• These technologies not only allow retina specialists to diagnose retinal disease, but also to monitor the effects of a patient’s treatment over time.
