View DoctorsPatients are first assessed by the Eye Institute’s nurses, orthoptists, or optometrists. Following this, a pediatric ophthalmologist completes a medical exam. An initial comprehensive exam includes administering drops to dilate the pupils and takes 2 hours. Follow-up examinations may be performed by orthoptists, optometrists, or pediatric ophthalmologists, depending upon the condition.
Treatment for children is individualized, based on their specific diagnosis. Treatment options may include one, or a combination of the following:
Eye disease in children can be a genetic or hereditary disorder. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is one of the few centers in the world with an on-site ocular geneticist as well as available gene therapy for a specific form of retinal dystrophy. Please see our Ocular Genetics Service page.
Managing pediatric patients with eye disease requires a specialist, multidisciplinary team. Caregivers involved in patient care for this service include:
